God Should Be at the Heart of Learning

It’s time for school again.  It’s time for students and teachers to make a voyage of learning and discovery.  Many fascinating and useful subjects will be studied, but no education will be complete or balanced if God is not at the center of it.  As C.S. Lewis said, “Education without values, as useful as it is, seems rather to make man a more clever devil.”

As Solomon said, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge.” (Proverbs 1:7)  When God is at the center of a child’s education and worldview, he or she will be equipped to excel in life.

A God-centered worldview leads us to view all people we deal with as being made in the image of God and therefore valuable.  A God-centered worldview warns us of the ruin that comes through pride and the love of money.  A God-centered worldview promotes excellence by reminding us to work to please God rather than people.  A God-centered worldview motivates us to behave ethically when no one is looking and there are no obvious consequences for unethical conduct.  A God-centered worldview motivates us to focus on eternity rather than short-term gain.  A God-centered worldview motivates us to do everything we do to the glory of God.

Parents, make sure your children have a complete education.  As Moses directed, teach your kids about God and his instruction for life every time you have the opportunity.  “And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” (Deut. 6:6-7) -Paul
