Times of Refreshing Matter
Abraham Lincoln is credited with saying, “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the ax.” Regular renewal is vital to effectiveness.
No one will ever live a more successful life than Jesus did. His practice of refreshing himself was an important key to his success.
Jesus was a busy man who faced many demands. Even in hectic periods, however, he took time to refortify himself. “But now even more the report about him went abroad, and great crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed of their infirmities. But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray.” (Luke 5:15-16)
Be a giver like Jesus was. But enable yourself to keep giving and doing good things in the long-term. Do what Jesus did. Regularly withdraw from the action to refill your tank. Talk to God and take in his word. Recreate, enjoy friends, nurture your body and your mind.
It wasn’t selfish of Jesus to regularly withdraw from the crowds, and it isn’t selfish of you. Your car carries you farther if you regularly service it. You will go farther and give more if you take time to sustain yourself.
Take time this summer to be renewed. You’ll have more to give if you do. It means nothing to love your neighbor as yourself if you don’t love yourself. -Paul
