Don't Be a Scoffer

When a thing, person, or idea is strange or unfamiliar to us, we may be tempted to scoff, mock, and laugh, expressing scorn and contempt for what we don’t understand.  Jude speaks disapprovingly of scoffers, writing, But these people blaspheme all that they do not understand.” (Jud 1:10)  Solomon also speaks disapprovingly of scoffers, writing, "How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge?” (Pro 1:22)

To despise the unfamiliar is to proclaim new understanding unworthy of acquiring and to shut down the learning process, pridefully embracing ignorance and missing out on great blessings.  Solomon says that when we gain wisdom and understanding, we are really gaining great wealth. “How much better to get wisdom than gold! To get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.” (Pro 16:16)

Jesus says that knowing the truth sets us free. “So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, ‘If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’" (Joh 8:31-32)

Let’s not scoff at the unfamiliar. Let’s open our eyes, ears, and minds. Let’s always be ready to grow in wisdom and understanding, and let’s be open to great blessings.  -Paul
