God's Word Is Near You
Being able to read the Bible is nothing to take for granted. Prior to the existence of printing presses, copies of the Bible were handwritten, less common, and more expensive. For much of history, a translation of the Bible in your language might have been hard to come by. For much of history, there was a decent likelihood that even if you did have a Bible in your language, you wouldn’t know how to read. There were periods when an ordinary layperson wouldn’t have been allowed to possess a personal copy of the Bible. There are parts of the world today where possession of a Bible is illegal. Many memorize scripture so that it cannot be taken from them.
People from other times and places would be amazed at our easy access to the Bible in this nation and day. Today, nearly 9 out of 10 American households possess at least one copy of the Bible. Today, part or all of the Bible is available in over 2,800 languages. More than 450 English versions of the Bible exist. Printed versions of the Bible can be had inexpensively. The Bible is available in numerous, free electronic formats. Free audio-Bibles are available. Free Bible study aids are available.
